ATNC Development

The ATNC is based on a set of values and beliefs generated by a group of U.K. emergency nurses. This group was surveyed to find out what they felt was important to care adequately for the trauma patient, and to prepare trauma nurses for such a role. The results of this initiative were very important and laid the foundations for the development of the ATNC. In 1990, the ATNC was established with the full support of the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

The values and beliefs generated by the founding members of the ATNC remain the focus for leaders of ATNC:

  • Patients have a right to be cared for by specifically trained and educated nurses.
  • Individuals entering the course already have existing expertise, skills and knowledge in the field of trauma nursing.
  • Individuals entering the course are motivated to learn and are self-directing.
  • Individuals learn and develop more effectively when facilitated and supported by learner centred approaches based on principles of adult education.
  • Shared learning opportunities produce greater team cohesion and mutual understanding of each other’s professional role.
  • Individuals can complement each other if aims, objectives and strategies are explicit.
  • Individuals, through understanding and clarifying their role, are more effective in fulfilling that role.

The ATNC received formal educational accreditation by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in July 2018 and in 2020 an agreement was reached for ATNC to run as one of the courses on the college portfolio. When ATNC is relaunched alongside ATLS® 10th Edition, the intellectual property will be held by the college who will facilitate courses through the regional network of course centres.
